An Unhelpful Law

Kyleigh's Law may help the drivers, but it also may not. There are many unnecessary rules in the law that prevent the drivers from doing a lot. The law states that drivers with a permit or provisional licence abide by this law. While you have your permit or provisional licence, you have to wear a red sticker on your licence plate. Many believe this is the worst rule out of all of the rules of Kyleigh's Law. People feel that this sticker is going to endanger the young drivers rather than help them. As we all know, there are many pedophiles and rapists in this country, and many of them go after younger targets. Putting this red sticker on a young driver's car is making the driver an easy target for the pedophiles and rapists. Say one of the drivers had their sticker on their car while at a public place, a pedophile could see it and follow the driver wherever he or she is going and the driver would be in serious trouble. Another rule is that there is no driving past 11pm unless for work or religious purposes. What if someone called a driver with a provisional licence saying that they needed to be picked up from somewhere because something bad happened? Teens are put in bad situations constantly and if this happens after 11pm, an older sibling or friend would not be able to go help them by picking them up. Yet another rule is that only one passenger is permitted. It no longer matters if they are related to you or not, only one passenger is allowed to be in the car with a young driver now. The law used to be that you could have one person outside your family, and as many family members as there were seat belts, but now unless the parent or guardian is present, there can only be one person in the car with a driver with a provisional licence. The last rule of the law states that there will be no cellphone use, handheld or hands free. There could be an emergency and a young driver would not be able to pick up the phone, even if it is hands free. These rules are ridiculous and a complete outrage. Kyleigh's Law will be more hurtful than helpful and after a couple of years, NJ will see that.
